At the moment Berlin-Tegel (TXL), with an annual capacity of 12 million passengers, is the most important and popular airport in Berlin. This, of course, may change on completion of the extension work to Berlin-Schönefeld, (SXF) with its current annual capacity of 7 million passengers, and its upgrade and name change to Berlin Brandenburg International with an estimated capacity of 22 – 25 million passengers.

The closure of the other overburdened airports is then planned. The third and smallest airport, Berlin-Tempelhof (THF), with approx. 1.5 million passengers per annum found its fame in World War II, when the American “candy bombers” airlifted necessary supplies to the whole of West Berlin during the blocades.
